Festive Foliage for your Christmas Table
As the festive season draws near, the floristry at Thyme continues to respond to the seasons, keeping in step with and reflecting the pared-back winter landscape and gardens that surround us. We love to create loose, natural arrangements choosing a wonderful mix of seasonal foliage including armfuls of herbs and foraged ingredients. The displays are subtle, and muted, less exuberant in colour compared to spring and summer, but just as beautiful in their understated simplicity. They are full of texture, tone and scent, evocative of the season.
To create a festive foliage table setting fit for a party or Christmas Day itself, you will need to start by gathering all your ingredients together. For the most interesting and beautiful display, source and carefully forage for as wide a range of foliage as possible. Festive foliage might include eucalyptus, pine, ivy, sage, rosemary, vines, poppy heads and seed heads, look for interesting shapes and colours, anything that catches your eye and evokes winter. If you are not able to pick your own foliage, there is a wonderful selection available by post from British flower supplier Clowance Flowers.
Once you have gathered together your foliage ingredients, decide on the vessels you will fill. Again, as wide variety as possible is best – include a mix of different sizes and shapes to give interest and an informality to your table setting. You can use glass, as well as ceramic, vintage and antique vessels, bottles and ink wells. Fill each vessel generously with a mix of your ingredients – some small and dinky, others large and bold – so creating little arrangements of texture and scent.
Finally arrange the beautiful foliage filled vessels down your table, dotting them around candles and clustering them in small groups. You can easily refresh the individual arrangements as pieces fade by simply removing them and replacing with another fresh stem.
