A Note from Edward Bulmer
Bringing Nature Indoors: Thyme's new 'Cutting Garden Rooms’ in collaboration with Edward Bulmer Natural Paint
Mother Nature is the most assured and accomplished colourist of all time, and we always look to her for daily inspiration. From fruits to flowers to the contrast of seasonal skies with our landscapes, there are natural palettes and pairings right on our doorstep for the taking and creating.
At the heart of Thyme’s ethos lies a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and a respect for the natural world. It is this shared ethos that has fostered a long-standing friendship and mutual respect between Thyme and Edward Bulmer Natural Paint. Over many years, the rooms at the hotel have been painted in our plant-based colours. Caryn, has created a palette of soft greens, pinks and earthy shades, all which blend with the picturesque Gloucestershire landscape. The interiors at Thyme and the Bertioli collections are all about bringing the outside in, creating a full sensory experience.
With the English country garden in mind and the summer months fast approaching, it is only natural that our collaboration included a lot of pinks and greens. But what is wonderful to see in these curated palettes is all of the different tones and how the designs work across the colours groups - and with more surprising colours too, such as the deep reds and earthy browns.
Edward Bulmer Natural Paint is made from plants, - without nasty chemicals or fossil fuel derived plastics. We create the colours using a ground-breaking plant-based binder mixed with the finest earth and mineral pigments; and because the colours all derive from the same family of pigments, they can all work in tonal harmony together. By using colours created, quite literally, from the earth, it is easy to see the natural difference in these paints. Gone are the flat, lack lustre walls of mainstream paints, instead, you see living walls with colours that respond to the changing seasons and light.
There is no better way to lift one’s mood than to bring nature indoors in this way. If you start with nature, you can’t go wrong. Interiors and colours inspired by nature have the same effect; they ground us, invigorate us and at the same time, with the right shade, they calm us.
These colours make the perfect soft backdrop to the new ‘Cutting Garden’ designs, gracefully allowing the flowers to hold centre stage, whether they be fabrics on soft furnishings or complementing walls covered in exquisite wallpapers.
