Those celebrating New Year's Eve at the Swan this year will find on their menu a curious dessert named 'Galette des Rois’. It is a delicious French dessert traditionally served on Twelfth Night (January 5th). Legend has it that it was created to honour the arrival of the three kings to Bethlehem.
The modern tradition is for two little figurines or 'fèves' to be hidden inside, much like a sixpence in an English Christmas pudding. The lucky person whose slice contains the trinket will become the King or Queen for the day, everyone else obeying their every whim.
Here at the Swan, we've interpreted this to mean the lucky recipient will also enjoy a bottle of sparkling wine on the house when the clock strikes twelve.
